Indeed, an enigma...

Add this intriguing 1857 map and I'm hooked....

Mystery deepens.jpg

And so the mystery deepens.
Phil Fenton, who introduced me to the puzzle,
couldn't throw any light on the mystery.

A closer examination of visual clues suggests that while the structure was in existence Ca1857 - 1890, exactly how long it operated as a public house is unknown .

Nevertheless, it is fair to say

Fyansford during the mid- to late-1800s, was well served by public houses.

Hmmmm!
Was it one, the other, or both?
Being only recently (February, 2025) introduced to the possibility
of yet another hotel, the Toll Gate Hotel, being on this very same site (Ca 1855), I am somewhat perplexed...

Dianne Higgins in her document 'An Investigation of the History of Fyansford' Ca 1981 refers to this hotel.

I am offering a copy of my book,
"A Brief History of Public Houses In and Around Fyansford"
to anyone who can resolve this situation.
